‘Gothic’wasoriginallyaderogatorytermcoinedbyscholarsduringtheRenaissancetodescribethe‘barbaric’medievalarchitecturethatarosewiththedeclineoftheclassicalformsoftheRomanEmpire.Thewordisnowunderstoodtodescribeastyleofbuildingsandobjectscreatedbetweenthetwelfthandfifteenthcenturieswhichincorporateelementssuchasnoveladvancesinmasonryworkandthecharacteristicogivalarch.
TheGothicperiodsawanincreasedemphasisonthepowerofimages,wherevisionbecameanactiveforceforactivatingemotionandinspiringcontemplation.Thegreatcathedralsconstructedinthisperiod―withtheirthinwallsandhighvaultsfilledwithstatuaryandstained-glasswindows―weredesignedtoevokeaweamongvisitors.TheexquisiteGothicobjectsfeaturedintheMcCarthyCollectionrepresentabroadspectrumofworkshopsandstylesacrossWesternEurope,datingfrombetweenthethirteenthandfourteenthcenturies,allofwhichcontributedtothesplendourwenowassociatewiththeaestheticoftheHighGothic.
